7.1 Physical and chemical properties
Under normal temperature and pressure conditions, chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with an irritating odor and is toxic. With atomic number Z = 17, it occupies the space next to argon in the periodic table, where it is the second halogen below fluorine.
It was discovered in 1774 by C.W. Scheele while studying the attack of pyrolusite (MnO 2 ) by hydrochloric acid.
The molar mass of chlorine is 35.453. Its dissociation enthalpy is 239.44 kJ/mol.
