6. Other processes for obtaining chlorine

Among the processes for recycling HCl into chlorine, there are three main categories:

  • electrolysis of HCl into chlorine;

  • oxidation of HCl by nitric acid (Kel-Chlor process);

  • catalytic oxidation of HCl (Deacon process).

6.1 Electrolysis of HCl solutions

There are three processes:

  • electrolysis of aqueous solutions using a diaphragm (Uhde process);

  • gas phase electrolysis (Dupont process);

  • membrane electrolysis (Bayer/De Nora process).
