Fiber filter filtration is still the most widely used process for purifying air of suspended particles, as it generally offers a good compromise between high efficiency and acceptable energy costs.
Collective or individual protection systems (ventilation filters, respiratory protection devices) or industrial dust collectors (bag filters or cartridge filters) are composed of non-woven fibrous media, i.e. "a manufactured product made of a web or mat of individual fibers, directly or randomly oriented, bonded by friction, cohesion or adhesion", according to the European Disposal and Nonwovens Association.
