ABSTRACT

Ultrasonic determination of residual stress is based on the dependence of the propagation velocity of the ultrasonic wave on the stress state in the material. When a material is stressed, there is a variation in the propagation velocity of the ultrasonic wave. Residual stress is generally defined as the internal forces that remain in the mechanical parts when they are not subject to any external force. In this paper, different steps in the ultrasonic method are presented: the principle of the stress measurement, examples of applications on the mechanical parts, and an overview on future developments of the ultrasonic method.
