8. Advantages of the technique

The ECAP technique offers a number of advantages that distinguish it from other severe plastic deformation processes. One of its key features is that the dimensions of the extruded material remain virtually unchanged on leaving the die. As a result, very large, uniform deformations can be achieved after one or more passes, depending on the material and operating conditions.

Mechano-synthesis is a technique involving the grinding of metallic elements followed by consolidation of the powder by compaction, with the aim of producing nanostructured materials. The ECAP process avoids the disadvantages inherent in mechanosynthesis, such as contamination during grinding and residual porosity in the materials produced.
