4. Aluminium alloys for extrusion

Aluminum alloys are usually classified into two main groups, depending on whether or not they are subject to heat treatment leading to structural hardening. Alloys for extrusion still conform to this classification.

4.1 Aluminum alloys without structural hardening

In the as-spun condition (F condition), these alloys are in a state very close to the annealed condition (O condition), which is characterized by maximum ductility and minimum mechanical strength. Additional hardening can be achieved through work-hardening, but this is achieved at the expense of ductility.

In the case of extruded aluminum alloys, work-hardening is generally achieved by drawing or wire-drawing. Hardening options range from annealed O to work-hardened H1x, work-hardened...
