1. Background and applications

Platinum (Pt) and the platinoids (rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), ruthenium (Ru), osmium (Os) and iridium (Ir)) are noble metals. They belong to group VIII of the periodic table.

As mentioned in the previous dossier [M 1 625] , the standard potentials of redox couples involving platinum and platinoids are higher than those of base metals, giving them very interesting physico-chemical properties, particularly in terms of corrosion resistance, both atmospheric and in aqueous media.
