9. Environmental considerations

9.1 Risks associated with magnesium metal production

The main risks concern :

  • the release of hydrogen resulting from the reaction of magnesium with water;

  • ignition of liquid or powdered magnesium.

Liquid magnesium reacts with traces of water, causing violent explosions. Personnel must be protected from accidental splashes by fireproof clothing and various accessories (goggles, helmets, masks, coats and casting boots). In the event of combustion of molten baths, cover flows must be available and ready to use.

Solid magnesium presents particular risks in the event of fire, depending on whether its form is massive (ingots and billets) or divided (pellets, powders)....
