9. Conclusion

The mechanisms of nuclear glass degradation are well understood. They result in kinetic rates that vary by several orders of magnitude, depending on the glass composition, temperature, pH, and solution composition. The glass-water system does not reach thermodynamic equilibrium. This results in continuous glass weathering, but at a rate that can be slowed by a passivation effect caused by the weathering film, which limits mass transfer between the intact glass and the solution.

The models incorporate this mechanistic knowledge to predict deterioration rates and study the impact of the environment on the durability of these materials.
