pH and the ions in solution can influence the weathering mechanisms of silicate glasses. pH affects the molecular mechanisms of bond breaking and reforming, since most chemical reactions involve the presence of H + or OH - ion – . pH also influences the speciation of elements in aqueous solution, and thus the equilibria between the solid phases and the dissolved species.
