10. Glossary

Nuclear glass;

Borosilicate glass formulated to contain fission products and minor actinides resulting from the processing of spent nuclear fuel.

Weathering;

A physicochemical process by which glass transforms through interaction with water into weathering products: hydrated glass, gel, secondary phases, and aqueous species.

Alteration layer or film;

A solid, hydrated material resulting from the weathering of glass, located between the intact glass and the solution, and generally consisting of hydrated glass, gel, and secondary phases.

Gel;

A component of the weathering layer or film. These materials are predominantly silica-based, amorphous, porous, and hydrated, formed by the weathering of glass.
