Overview

ABSTRACT

Silicones or polysiloxanes are original polymers which are distinct from elastomers and plastic materials generally used due to their organometallic structure. These materials have a large number of applications. The most technical applications or those requiring a high level of safety have been the subject of an extensive normalization concerning their specifications for specific fields of use. Although all these norms are not in use, they present an interest in the independent and objective perspectives they provide for silicone possibilities.

 INTRODUCTION

The applications of silicones or polysiloxanes are as diverse as the products marketed and their properties of use. They cover a wide range of fields, some of which fall outside the usual scope of elastomer applications.

Uses range from high-tech to DIY. In fact, the material's liquid form makes it very easy to work with, enabling the production of prototypes or small series.

In a first dossier ( [N 2 880] ), we first dealt with their general structure and properties, in particular those of elastomers and fluorosilicones. Here, however, we shall concentrate on the application side.

Important: additional information can be found in another issue of Techniques de l'Ingénieur. We encourage readers to refer to the following reference: [A 3 475] .
