Classification Thresholds

The classification threshold is the quantitative criterion associated with a category in the nomenclature of classified facilities. It is used to determine the applicable classification regime and, consequently, the regulatory requirements that will govern the facility’s commissioning and operation.

With a few exceptions (categories without thresholds), each category is characterized by several quantitative thresholds, each associated with different classification regimes.

The principle of classification is as follows: the higher the quantitative thresholds, the greater the risk the facility is presumed to pose to the environment and public safety, and the more stringent the applicable classification regime and associated requirements will be.
