2. Characterize the packaging system

Once the regulatory constraints and technical feasibility have been established, an assessment of the packaging portfolio's performance needs to be carried out. To do this, it is necessary to carry out an analysis of the packaging systems used by the company, i.e. the set of :

  • Primary packaging, also known as the sales unit. For example, the plastic bottle containing 1 liter of milk is the packaging in direct contact with the product.

  • The secondary packaging, also a grouping unit, designed simultaneously to protect the product during the handling and transport phases of logistics, and to limit the number of handling operations associated with these same logistics or shelf display. For example, six bottles of milk can be grouped together in a heat-sealed film.
