When you first start using social networks for professional purposes, you need to think about your own modes of communication and interaction, as well as those of your network, and your need for confidentiality or visibility. For this type of project (often new to the organization), starting with specifications can be counter-productive and a waste of time. The human and technical parameters are numerous, interdependent and rarely fully known in advance. Experimentation, on the other hand, enables you to discover new facets, identify relevant issues, analyze project parameters and better define new usages for smoother deployment later on (see "Going further": "Corporate social networks: should you burn the specifications?").
