10. Glossary

Function

Action of a product or one of its components expressed exclusively in terms of purpose. A function is expressed by an infinitive verb followed by a complement. It must disregard any reference to solutions (AFNOR standard NF X 50-151).

Product

A product must be the best compromise, at a given time and in a given context, to satisfy the user's needs at the lowest possible cost.

Design and production (of a product)

The entity responsible for the design of a product, which, in addition to technical requirements, also takes into account the conditions, costs and lead times for production.

Need

Necessity or desire experienced by a user. The expressed need is characterized by a set of services.
