2. Mastering Twitter vocabulary

  • Tweet: message published on the network, whose length was originally limited to 140 characters, and was extended in 2017 to 280 characters (excluding text of any links accompanying the message). A Tweet can also contain images, videos, polls, etc.

  • Twitto or twitteur: Twitter user.

  • Hashtag: keyword preceded by a pound sign; designates important terms in a tweet. They can be used for research, via the Twitter search engine, or for monitoring, by systematically collecting messages containing a given hashtag. Hashtags can be common nouns, proper nouns, expressions, conference titles and so on.

  • @: designates a Twitter account.

  • Subscriber or follower: network members who follow a given account.
