The Twitter communication tool –, which means "to chirp" in English, hence the little blue bird logo –, was launched in 2006 by the Californian start-up Odeo, which has since become Twitter Inc. Its initial aim was to enable a group of users to communicate by sending each other very short messages, via the Internet, SMS or instant messaging, which explains why the home page for a long time featured the catchphrase "What are you doing?
The service's positioning has since changed to emphasize information sharing, with the slogan "What's new?".
With messages originally limited to 140 characters, Twitter has long been a tool for social interaction (conversations...) rather than information.
