4. Impact of passenger volumes on station infrastructure design and crowd management methods

The sizing of passenger facilities is fundamental in MTF to facilitate the flow of passengers and thus guarantee the frequency of circulation: width and layout of platforms, width of staircases and escalators, or that of corridors and doors. Measuring these flows with reasonable accuracy is essential to anticipate the effects of congestion, to dimension facilities right from the design stage, and to regulate overflows in operational terms before they prevent the proper synchronization of passenger and train flows.
