Overview
ABSTRACT
This article presents the qualification process for tools as defined in the 2011 version of the CENELEC EN 50128. Although the previous version focused on the characterization of compilers, the new version takes into account all the tools used for the implementation of a software application. The concept of tool qualification is thus presented and examples are provided in order to explain the need it meets.

INTRODUCTION
Software production is based on the use of software for development, compilation, verification and validation. The standards to be applied for the production of critical software define a process for controlling the introduction of defects into software, but this process can only achieve the predefined objectives if the tools used also meet certain objectives.
The DO 178 standard – version B introduced the notion of tool qualification, introduced in IEC 61508 version 2008 and consequently in derived standards such as ISO 26262 and 50128 version 2011.
The purpose of this article is to present the problem, associated concepts and expectations.
