4. Performance

The development of the tilting system has been justified by the possibility of increasing the commercial mean speed of passenger trains, by negotiating curves at higher speeds than a conventional train, while maintaining or even improving running safety and passenger comfort, and reducing the aggressiveness of the rolling stock on the track. In this section, the prediction and measurement of these performances are investigated, both to support key aspects of vehicle design (as highlighted in the previous chapter) and to achieve compliance with the relevant national and international standards.

The permissible speed increases, based on kinematic concepts, will be summarised. Additionally, possible speed increases based on real examples, will be demonstrated, with reference to the maximum cant deficiency permissible for conventional trains (France, Germany, Switzerland,...
