ABSTRACT
This article takes color as a physical and chemical attribute, in order to address the interaction between light and matter and define precisely what is meant by visual appearance. This interaction occurs in the stimulation of our system of vision, and involves many aspects of optics. The fundamental concept of complex dielectric function is explained in some detail as it is omnipresent in light-matter interaction and macroscopic measurements. This function is a key to understanding the concepts of tristimulus, complex refraction, and dispersion and diffusion of light.

INTRODUCTION
Although the word color immediately conjures up highly polysemous notions, in these pages it is approached from only one aspect of light-matter interaction, that of physics. Classic colorimetry has abundantly defined the quantities and standards that enable any practitioner, whether designer, colorist, formulator, engineer or researcher in the academic or industrial sectors, to exchange data concerning the visual appearance (such as chromaticity and gloss, for example) of materials or lighting systems. The most important international structure, based on a French initiative, is the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE)
