3. Electrochemical sensors

Unlike conductivity-based detectors, which have a universal response, electrochemical detectors are specific to an analyte or group of analytes, exploiting the redox properties of the species present in solution. These detectors have excellent sensitivity, enabling trace measurements, and a wide range of linearity. On the other hand, they are sensitive to various parameters, such as the flow rate of the chromatographic eluent or pH, and to certain substances, such as dissolved oxygen, which can disrupt the measurement depending on the potential applied.

Electrochemical detection is applied to ion chromatography when a particularly sensitive or specific technique is required
