Overview

ABSTRACT

Measuring the pressure at any given point of a fluid network is not easy to achieve as the instrument, regardless of its sophistication level and accuracy, inevitably interacts with the other elements of the chain. Determining the dynamic response of pressure-measuring devices is more difficult in this case than in the static mode. The selected measuring devices must be adapted to often stringent environmental conditions and operating precautions must be followed in terms of assembly, positioning and cleanliness. This article ends on the difficulty of interpreting measurement results.

 INTRODUCTION

The principles, technologies and main characteristics of mechanical pressure gauges, sensors and transducers, instruments used alone or as components of transmission assemblies (transmitters and networks), have been presented successively in previous articles [R 2 040v2][R 2 041v2][R 2 042v2] .

In this fourth and final article, the focus is on interpreting the results of the measurement chain: the instrument, however sophisticated and accurate, interacts with the other elements in the chain. Particular attention must therefore be paid to the design and implementation of the assembly. The associated parameters, defined on the basis of a mechanical model, ensure that the installation measures exactly what is required. Different stages in the design of a measurement chain can thus be proposed, based on instruments that are not only adapted to the environment and the application, but also to the type of transmission required. The use of equipment subject to standards or regulatory constraints is also addressed. Solutions for protection against certain harmful effects of the environment and measurement range are presented. Finally, some examples are given of how to interpret the results.
