6. Conclusion
Bioacoustics is by definition a cross-disciplinary science, exploring both biological and physical acoustics. It is a young science, born in the middle of the 20th century, thanks to the development of portable, autonomous recorders. Initially, it focused on collecting and describing the sounds emitted by different animal species. Today, it is developing along three main lines. A purely ethological one, aimed at understanding one of the most important facets of animal behavior: the exchange of acoustic information. These exchanges are involved in all the important moments of animal life: identification, localization, feeding and reproduction. The second axis is neuro-physiological, focusing mainly on the oscine song nuclei.
