 INTRODUCTION

Since the 2000s, robotics research has developed a field called "robot-assisted therapy" or Robot Assisted Activity (RAA) (Rialle, 2012). But what is really happening in the field? This study analyzes the transformations induced by the introduction of an animaloid social robot in a hospital care unit. The object of study is the PARO ® robot used in the Cognitive Behavioral Unit (CBU) and Alzheimer's Follow-up and Rehabilitation Care (SSRA) of a public hospital in Normandy in spring-summer 2016.

The qualitative survey combines five data collection techniques:

  • non-participant observation of the PARO ® robot by nursing staff working with patients in the UCC and SSRA;

  • non-directive group interviews with SSRA and UCC staff;

  • semi-structured individual interviews with SSRA and UCC staff;

  • a PARO ® observation and evaluation grid, drawn up by myself and made available to staff when I am not on site;

  • non-participant observation of a working group of 10 caregivers on the use of PARO ® .
