3. Techniques for reducing volumes and odors

Ultimately, volume reduction makes it possible to limit the cost of phase separation and/or destruction of organic matter. However, the concentration of pollution by these techniques must not be to the detriment of separation efficiency (limit pollution return to the clear phase), nor cause odor nuisance (avoid odors by limiting putrid fermentations, confine, ventilate and deodorize odorous areas if necessary).

3.1 Inventory of main routes

Sludge treatment strategies are based on the following three main principles:

  • minimize the volume to be evacuated by eliminating water or destroying dry matter biologically (digestions) or chemically (oxidations...);
