Overview

ABSTRACT

The rapid detection of illicit substances is an imperative part of the fight against the traffic in drugs and other prohibited substances, especially in criminal proceedings requiring an immediate appearance before a court. However, their identification may include a preparatory extraction phase. Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive and highly selective technique that quickly determines the nature of chemical compounds. Different samples of narcotic drugs were analysed by Raman spectroscopy to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. Among other things, this technique allows us to detect and sometimes identify the components of illicit products as well as to verify their homogeneity.

 INTRODUCTION

The rapid detection of illicit products is an imperative in the fight against drug trafficking and prohibited substances, particularly in the case of criminal proceedings involving immediate appearance. However, their identification may require a prior extraction step. Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive, highly selective technique for rapidly determining the nature of chemical compounds. Various narcotics samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. Among other things, the technique was used to detect and, in some cases, identify the components of illicit products, and to check their homogeneity.

This article is taken from the journal "Annales des falsifications, de l'expertise chimique et toxicologique" (n° 974) published by the SECF (Société des experts chimistes de France).
