 INTRODUCTION

The first two ignition systems (low- and high-voltage magnetos) coexisted until 1925, when battery ignition and inductive coils became the norm on internal-combustion engines.

What all these systems had in common was a mechanical ignition timing system which, for reasons of longevity, was gradually replaced by so-called "transistorized ignition" and then by "full electronic ignition". This dossier reviews these different ignition techniques.

Readers are referred to the for information on the principle of spark ignition for premixed engines.
