Overview

ABSTRACT

Metal sheet drawing allows for the production of complex non extractable forms. The choice of the metal sheet must be adapted to the type of forming. Sound knowledge and description of the forces involved during the drawing process is thus essential. This approach allows for determining precisely the impacting role of mechanical characteristics such as the anisotropy coefficient, work-hardening coefficient, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation. Metallurgic aspects such as crystallography, grain size, surface and homogeneity of material must not be left aside as they also influence the suitability for forming.

 INTRODUCTION

To better adapt the choice of sheet metal to a given type of stamping, it is important to take into account the influence of mechanical characteristics on forming. The first part of this article describes the forces involved in deep drawing, followed by a detailed analysis of the role of mechanical characteristics such as anisotropy coefficient, strain-hardening coefficient, yield strength and tensile strength. Metallurgical factors such as crystallography, metallographic structure, grain size, surface area and material homogeneity also influence formability and will also be examined.

The complete study of the subject includes the articles :

  • [BM 7 510] Sheet metal forming. Importance of deformation modes;

  • [BM 7 511] Sheet metal stamping. Mechanical aspects (this article).
