Overview

ABSTRACT

This article deals exclusively with enameled wire, namely, copper or aluminum wire coated with a very thin layer of insulation. The first section is devoted to the presentation of enamel insulated wire currently available on the market. Impregnating varnish will be discussed but the varnishes themselves will not be mentioned. The word enamel, originally reserved for the description of vitrified crystalline materials, is used here by extension in the designation of irregularly structured insulation products, created in thin layers at a high temperature. Another section is devoted to the chemistry of these enamels and to development techniques.

 INTRODUCTION

This presentation deals exclusively with enamelled wires, i.e. insulating enamels applied to copper (or aluminium) conductors.

The meaning of the word enamel, originally reserved for the designation of vitrified crystalline materials, is used here, by extension, to designate insulating products of less regular structure, built up in thin layers, at high temperature, on the conductor to be covered.
