 INTRODUCTION

Large-scale generating units and their associated transmission networks are usually looped, making them systems with a reputation for delicate balance and operation. Operated as a radial system and following the brief description just given, distribution networks can sometimes appear simpler. In reality, however, because of the multiplicity of components, the diversity of basic technical choices, the need to coordinate many different types of protection, and the risks that different users must be protected against in their factories or homes, a distribution network is a highly complex whole, and a local operator may not always easily perceive all its constraints.

The initial choice to be made by the operator is that of the neutral, from which most of the network's characteristics are then derived. This will be explained below 2 , with a particular focus on the French network 3 .

We'll finish with a quick look at 4 intelligent operating systems, the development of which has been made possible by technical progress and lower costs in the IT field.
