4.1.1 Description

An arc furnace is an electrothermal system that uses the energy supplied by an electric arc to heat a load. There are several types of arc furnace. The most widely used is the Héroult furnace, named after the inventor of this process at the end of the 19th century. In this type of furnace, the arc is established between the electrodes (connected to the power network) and the load to be heated.
