Overview

ABSTRACT

The IP networks, which transport a large number of services with their availability constraints, represent at this time an important part of the telecommunication infrastructures. Incidents such as material breakdowns, the loss of transmission links, software bugs or maintenance operations, reduce their availability. Solutions exist which allow for reducing the impact of these incidents on traffic. This is the objective of the technologies allowing for ensuring "High Availability" functions in the IP/MPLS networks.

 INTRODUCTION

Although the IP protocol was originally designed to provide "best effort" services, IP networks now account for a significant proportion of telecoms infrastructures, and are designed to carry a wide range of services with their own availability constraints (remote applications, voice, video, television, etc.).

IP networks can be affected by incidents likely to reduce their availability, such as hardware failures, loss of transmission links, software bugs or maintenance operations. However, solutions are available to reduce the impact of such incidents on traffic. This dossier describes the technologies used to ensure "High Availability" in IP/MPLS networks, and how they are implemented on equipment.
