6.1 Option Window Scale (WS)
The original TCP specification provided a 16-bit coded field ("Window") to indicate the size of the Receive Window (RWIN) to the remote terminal. The direct implication of this choice on the performance of a TCP connection is that a TCP client can only send a maximum of 65 kilobytes (2 16 ) without acknowledgement. This window size limits the throughput of a TCP connection transported over modern networks.
