2. Setting the scene

In recent years, there has been a widespread awareness of the strategic role of IT, and the need for it to work in harmony with the organization's ecosystem. Through an approach based on usage, information systems (IS) are no longer seen as a cost center, but as a strategic instrument for creating value, which must be capitalized on in order to meet the challenges of an environment undergoing rapid and perpetual transformation.

This vision goes hand in hand with the recognition of human capital in knowledge management, in conjunction with open, intuitive information systems. Web 2.0-type collaborative tools are thus in line with a repositioning of the human being as the main actor/holder of an organization's cognitive and informational capital.
