Overview

ABSTRACT

The protection provided by anti-corrosion paints with air or oven drying capacities is due to the raw materials which constitute them: binders, pulverulent materials and additives, as well as the various layers of paint applied (primary paint, reinforcing layer, intermediary layer and finishing layer for decoration. This article details the forming of paint coatings on metals during drying. The anomalies during and after the process are then evoked and the regulation concerning these paints is explained according to their various fields of usage (notably the chemical sector, the agrifood, port and airport facilities, power plants, bridges, dams and engineering works).

 INTRODUCTION

Air-drying or oven-drying paints are formulated from raw materials such as binders (polymers), powder materials (pigments and fillers) and additives, and are used to protect and decorate metal substrates.

This protection is provided by paint systems comprising a primer containing anti-corrosion pigments, to which either a reinforcing coat (similar in composition to the primer) or an intermediate coat is applied. The finishing coat, which helps protect the metal substrate, has the essential role of decorating the substrate. This presentation can be completed by consulting standard NF T 36 001 of June 1988.

Anti-corrosion paints are mainly used in the following areas:

  • chemical industry ;

  • interior and exterior coatings for oil and gas pipelines ;

  • food processing plants ;

  • bridges and engineering structures ;

  • port facilities ;

  • water treatment (purification, piping, storage) ;

  • rolling stock (cars, trucks, railways, aeronautics) ;

  • airport facilities (metal halls, hangars) ;

  • power plants ;

  • penstocks ;

  • dams.

The choice of paint system will therefore have to take into account the exposure of the material: buried in the ground, exposed to the open air in a rural, maritime, industrial or maritime and industrial atmosphere.

However, to ensure the longevity of the painted material, the surface must be carefully prepared.
