4. Deposits

Molybdenum deposits are fairly widely distributed around the world. They span a broad range of geological eras, from the Precambrian through the Tertiary, and vary in origin. Most of the major mined deposits have low grades, below 0.5% Mo. The molybdenum content of the Earth's crust is approximately 1.5 g/t.

4.1 Porphyry deposits

Porphyry deposits account for the world’s largest resources (95%). Sulfides, including molybdenite, occur there as disseminated grains and in stockworks composed of quartz veinlets within fractured or brecciated granitic intrusive rocks, as well as in igneous or sedimentary rocks.
