2. Principles of corrosion resistance

In this paper, we propose to detail the various aspects of the corrosion behavior of titanium and its alloys, and the argument will be based on the following principles:

  • Titanium oxidizes easily, and it is the oxide layer that protects it;

  • anything that damages this layer will cause the titanium to corrode;

  • anything that helps preserve or reform this layer is beneficial.

The use of titanium and its alloys is also governed by :

  • the mechanical strength required for the intended application;

  • environment of use.
