12. Special case of β-alloys

We have shown that β-alloys offer higher mechanical properties than TA6V, let alone unalloyed titanium. We have also seen that certain additive elements are favorable to corrosion resistance. For this reason, these alloys can be used in devices where higher strength components are required. However, there are a number of limitations:

  • Alloys containing vanadium, such as Ti 6Al 4V and Ti 15V 3Al 3Sn 3Cr, are less resistant to reducing acids than grade 2. Alloys containing molybdenum and chromium are more resistant to temperature and are therefore preferred in the acid ore washing and deep drilling industries. Table 8 gives the concentration of boiling hydrochloric acid above which the corrosion rate exceeds 0.13 mm/year. The "tempered" condition corresponds to the high mechanical...
