2. Define the subject and the limits of the approach
Specify the scope of the approach and in particular :
the product concerned and its field of application ;
what in the product can or must be addressed by the analysis, and what you can or must take into account in the analysis. This definition is particularly important in the case of redesign. Clearly list what must not be changed (e.g. a particular casting part, a center distance...), what must be changed (e.g. component obsolescence, end-of-life tooling...), compatibility or interchangeability constraints with previous versions;
any regulatory constraints, standards, etc. concerning the product;
the project framework to be respected: deadline, allocated budget...
