2. What are the advantages of ultrasonic (US) welding?

2.1 Heating at the parting line or in contact with the sonotrode

Let's place some material under the tooling of an ultrasonic (US) machine. The tooling can be complex, in 3D, with precise shapes, with die and counter-die, to produce :

  • one or more welds;

  • one or more cut-outs ;

  • welding and cutting at the same time (welding/cutting).

Tooling is normally specific to each application: it is called sonotrode (moving part, shape) and anvil (fixed, solid part, counter-shape).

They are designed according to :

  • the quantity of parts to be produced ;
