4. Mixed funnel (or double device)

As the name suggests, this funnel combines two processes. On the one hand, a classic Research & Development process (such as TRL, Stage&Gate...) works, but it can be cumbersome. It is often aligned with the budget year. Once candidate ideas have been put forward, the process tends to operate in "top-down" mode. Its main features are a gradual selection process and the difficulty of killing off launched projects. On the other hand, the process is light, but institutionalized, organized and resourced to capture ideas and proposals. It's a "bottom-up" approach, which provides real resources to support potential innovations, even going so far as to impact the official R&D project portfolio.
