When monochromatic light strikes an opaque medium, part of it is reflected specularly (as by a mirror), part is absorbed by the medium and dissipated as heat, and the rest is reflected and transmitted diffusely by the medium. It's this latter part that interests the chromatographer. The propagation of light within a granular opaque medium is a highly complex process that cannot be formulated by equations with an analytical solution. Simplifications are necessary, and the generally accepted model is that described by Kubelka and Munk
