3. Tranquilization systems

Baffles, perforated plates or partitions can be used to provide hydraulic resistance and limit the movement of liquids; this is an indispensable solution, for example, in on-board tanks subject to rolling and pitching.

The stilling tube surrounds a sensor. Its purpose is as much to shield the sensor from rapid surface undulations as to protect it from violent side currents.

A common solution is a stilling column mounted in parallel on a tank via two connections. These connections have the advantage of inducing damping created by their hydraulic resistance (or pressure drop) in series, but also of enabling isolation of the column, also known as a "tank" or "cylinder" depending on usage.
