A shunt is a resistor designed :

  • or to divert part of the current when the ammeter connected to its terminals cannot withstand the amplitude of the current. In this case, the current is divided between the shunt and the device in inverse proportion to their DC resistances, or their AC impedances (in reality, a shunt is never a perfectly pure resistor);
