6. General conclusion

Atmospheric odour dispersion modelling can be used for a variety of purposes, such as assessing the olfactory impact of a facility, or sizing a facility based on a given impact. Before starting a study, it is essential to be familiar with the specific characteristics of the site under study, i.e. the topography and local meteorological conditions, in order to select the model best suited to the problem. Proper use of models, with a systematic preliminary phase of validation of calculation hypotheses, enables a good description of the state of olfactory nuisance experienced by local residents. Odour dispersion models then become relevant tools for reflection, and enable odours to be taken into account as part of environmental management processes, as shown in this example.
