8. Junctions
8.1 General information
Ductile iron piping systems offer several types of joint covering different fields of application. They are all based on the compression of an elastomer gasket between two metal surfaces. The reaction pressure of the elastomer provides the seal. The growing use of elastomer ring junctions since the 1950s has enabled us to take a major step forward towards improved sealing of water pipes.
It should be noted that welding ductile iron parts together is very rarely used, and is the exception to the rule. This technique is generally used in factories for the manufacture of medium-sized components, such as watertight manholes.
