3. Mechanical properties of ductile cast iron

3.1 Ductile iron material

Cast iron is an iron alloy with a substantial carbon content in the form of graphite. The minimum carbon content is 2.03% (in mass fraction). Above 2.03% carbon, when the cast iron solidifies during cooling, graphite is formed; the metal phase(s) cannot accept any more carbon in solution in the solid state .
