The ability of dogs to discriminate and identify human odors has been used since 2003 by the Écully technical and scientific police to prove the presence of an individual's scent at a crime scene. For this purpose, prior to each forensic identification test, the dogs' performance is assessed during an aptitude test, during which the dog is required to perform three trials using a procedure similar to continuous training.
